Have your jeans stopped zipping? Perhaps you can no longer pull your favorite basic tee over your belly? Well, in that case, it might be time to add a few maternity pieces to your closet finally. Luckily, you really just need a few key pieces to create the maternity wardrobe of your dreams.
10 Tips For Creating A Complete Maternity Wardrobe
1. Go through your closet first
Before loading up your Target cart with their whole maternity line, take a look at what you have in your own closet. Oversized t-shirts, leggings, and loungewear are my go-to during pregnancy. In my pregnancies, I have been able to wear many of these items through my fourth trimester since they have extra room in them anyways (Lululemon Aligns are famous for this)!
2. Consider exactly what you’re dressing for
Your regular wardrobe probably consists of work clothes, gym clothes, lounging clothes, cute pieces for going out, and more. Think about what of those items you wear the most and pick maternity pieces based on that.
3. Stick to the basics
Personally, I recommend sticking to basic pieces. You will get tons of use out of items like black leggings, neutral t-shirts, and a pair of maternity jeans you love. That makes them worth the investment.
4. Set your budget
Think about how much you want to spend on maternity clothes. If you are doing financial planning to prepare for pregnancy and baby, make sure to add maternity clothing to the budget!
There is a wide range of stores with varying price points that you can shop at. Based on your budget, you can pick which stores will be best for you and shop there.
5. Create a maternity capsule wardrobe
You don’t want to overbuy maternity clothes but you do want to have key pieces that make you feel great! That’s why picking out a few high-quality items that you can wear in a variety of ways is a great idea.
6. Don’t forget about nursing bras
Having a good maternity and nursing bra is absolutely essential. I shop mostly at Kindred Bravely because I find their bras to be comfortable and easily adjustable for fluctuating sizing.
7. Comfort is key
You are creating another human being, so you deserve to be comfortable! Wear leggings and sweatpants every day if you want to, don’t hesitate to buy those stretchy maternity jeans, and don’t ever feel pressured to squeeze into something.
8. Emphasize the bump
Not all bumps are created equal, but EVERY bump is worth showing off. I specifically love a stretchy bodycon dress or skirt to emphasize a bump.
9. Pick items that feel like you
Don’t lose you! Just because you are becoming a mama doesn’t mean you have to lose your personal sense of style. Maternity fashion has come a long way and you can find pieces that fit pretty much every style.
10. Shop for versatile pieces that can be used for pregnancy, nursing, and beyond
Remember, you don’t have to buy strictly maternity-labeled clothing! You can pick out loose-fitting clothes to accommodate your changing body and items that are easy to pull down for nursing. This way you can get longer use out of your new wardrobe.
