Yes, you read that right. We are going to be going over exactly how to make postpartum padsicles, because as weird as the concept may seem mamas really deserve some relief down there. After all, bringing life into this world is no walk in the park and postpartum can be painful to our lady bits. We know you want to be enjoying your new little blessing instead of focusing on that pain! The hospital will probably give you something pretty much resembling a diaper, and we’re not saying these are completely useless but trust us that these padsicles will be a huge upgrade.
How to Make DIY Padsicles: Simple Tips for Postpartum Cold Packs
Things you’ll need to make your Padsicles
Before your baby comes along, make a trip to the grocery store and grab all these essentials that you will need to make your DIY padsicles. Vaginal birth is no walk in the park, especially for your lady bits.
Overnight Extra Absorbent Pads
Of course, go with whatever brand you would typically buy or feel most comfortable with! Just make sure to grab an absorbent pad option.
Something to keep in mind is to look for a brand that’s chlorine-free, just because they’re better for you in general and you’ll be extra sensitive down there.
L. Chlorine Free Maxi Extra Long Overnight Pads with Wings are my personal favorite. Seventh Generation Free and Clear Maxi Pads Overnight are also an awesome option along with Always Infinity. The best thing about the Always Infinity is that they are extremely thin for how absorbent they are.
Large Zip Lock Bags to Store Your Padsicles
You are going to want to make your padsicles before the baby comes which means you’ll need a good place to store them. It’s easiest to put them all in a large ziplock in the freezer, making them easy to grab when needed. There’s a good chance you have some zip lock bags in your home already, which is a bonus.
Aloe Vera Gel to Make Relieving Padsicles
Any Padsicle recipe you look at is going to include aloe vera gel because it provides such great relief. Make sure you purchase organic aloe vera. Any additional alcohol or chemicals will do more harm than good.
Aloe Vera will also be good to have around in general for postpartum (like for sore nipple relief!).
Witch Hazel
This stuff isn’t as sinister as it sounds, in fact, it’s actually pretty magical. It includes “tannins” which help to reduce swelling and fight off bacteria. Both really great things for a postpartum mama! Combined with the aloe, it’s the perfect combo for maximum soothing comfort.
Make sure you find witch hazel that is alcohol and paraben-free. The one by Quinn’s (pictured above) has incredible reviews. Check it out here!
Lavender Essential Oil for Healing Padsicles
The smell of lavender can be so relaxing, and that’s what makes it a great addition to your padsicle. It can also help you to heal faster. You’ll only need a few drops of lavender essential oil for each pad, so you should have some leftover to use in a diffuser. Your whole house will be smelling yummy in no time!
How to Make Padsicles
So now that you’ve got your ingredients, I guess we should probably teach you exactly what you need to do with them. Here are the steps you need to make frozen padsicles for postpartum!
- First, open up the maxi pad. You will want to leave its sticky side attached to the plastic wrapper.
- Spread a thin layer of aloe vera on the entire pad. There’s no such thing as too much, you’ll appreciate having it across the whole pad. The back of a spoon will be handy for spreading this out evenly.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of witch hazel by pouring it onto the pad. A good method is to just pour it straight down the middle. If you want to make witch hazel pads the fancy way, you can combine the witch hazel and lavender into a spray bottle and simply spritz the entire pad.
- Put a couple of droplets of lavender essential oils on the front, center, and back of the pad. Option 2, as stated above, is to use the spray bottle method.
- Refold the pad into its original plastic wrap.
- Repeat these steps until you have the number of pads desired and then stick them all into one large ziplock freezer bag.
- Store in the freezer and grab one as needed!
Rookie Mom Tip!
You’ll want to get a pad out 5-10 minutes before using to allow it to thaw out just a bit. Because let me tell you, completely frozen padsicles will not feel so pleasant on your lady bits. Keep in mind, as they melt they will probably leave you a bit wet so sit on a towel or somewhere you don’t mind making a bit of a mess.
