Next Friday, September 20 is national PARK(ing) Day, an art-slash-activism event that encourages folks to occupy a public parking space with a DIY park. There are about 1000 temporary parks across the globe this year.
This one was produced by the people who work at method in downtown San Francisco. The idea is that you simply feed the meter all day, entitling you to use the space for the things you’d like to do in a park. In the case of the PARK(ing) space above, they set up a putting hole.
Here’s one in Seattle.
How can you participate? If you act quickly, you could make your own parking space. The website has a manual for doing so. Or just freeload off of someone else’s organizational skills: check out the map on the PARK(ing) Day website.
Note: The user experience is sort of terrible on the Google Map. Go down to the bottom of the listings to find that there are multiple pages of maps. Click on each of them to see if more points of interest appear. (On the first page, there were not any parklets planned in my area, but subsequent pages revealed more.) Is there a location near you that you can stroll by?
