Notes from a mom traveling around the world: Bring a carrier

I have two young kids, but we are not really a stroller kind of family. We live on a very steep hill in busy San Francisco and there are lots of occasions when a stroller is just a pain to have around. With both kids, we have always favored a carrier so we can stay active and hands-free while avoiding lugging the stroller with us.

Our family also travels a lot — like multiple continents a year — and we do tend to bring a stroller with us for use in airports. But when we’re navigating the steps, stones, and stall-covered sidewalks of far-flung places, a stroller is often virtually impossible to use. That’s why I always bring a fabric baby carrier when I travel as well. I recently took the new BabyBJORN Baby Carrier OneÂ Outdoors on a trip to Southeast Asia with my 6-month-old, Allie. The carrier has extra padded shoulder straps and easily adjusts to fit me or my husband.

IÂ like the handy phone pocket that lets me easily capture candid pictures or look up maps without digging into my backpack.
